Low-profile Metal Braces: Comfortable, Efficient Treatment
Traditional braces have been used for decades to help patients achieve straighter, healthier smiles. This trusted method can close gaps, improve symmetry, and treat a range of bite issues. Dr. Andrew J. Kuhlberg excels in treating even the most complex cases with metal braces at our Avon, CT, practice. Dr. Kuhlberg is a board-certified orthodontic specialist, a distinction that only 25 percent of practicing orthodontists hold. Recognized as an expert in the field, he will strive to provide you the most economical treatment that can be completed in the shortest possible timeline.
An Introduction to Braces
All types of metal braces are composed of a series of wires that are attached to brackets placed on each tooth. The archwire spans your dental arch, and slight, periodic adjustments to this wire gently guide your teeth into a new position. Average treatment time ranges from one to two years. Once you achieve your final results, your orthodontist will typically provide you with a retainer to maintain your results. A straighter smile can not only boost your confidence, but also decrease your risk of developing oral health concerns, like decay, gum disease, and temporomandibular joint (joint) disorder, in the future.
What You Need to Know About Today's Orthodontics
A large number of orthodontic braces are available on the market today. Dr. Kuhlberg wanted to find a high-quality option that he considered a good investment, and chose to provide our patients with 3M™ Unitek braces. These low-profile metal braces feature smaller, flatter, and smoother brackets than older types of orthodontics. These braces are less bulky and generally more comfortable. The arch wire exerts less pressure and is longer-acting, which results in gentler and faster treatment. These titanium products are also designed to be free of nickel, so they are suitable for patients who are sensitive to the metal.
Your Treatment Options
At Kuhlberg Orthodontics, we offer traditional braces, ceramic braces, and Invisalign®. Dr. Kuhlberg customizes treatment for the best, longest-lasting results. In many cases, this involves recommending metal braces since they are effective in treating even extensive underbites, overbites, open bites, and cross bites. In order to determine which system is right for you, we will discuss your aesthetic and health concerns, as well as your lifestyle and treatment goals.
Dr. Kuhlberg will perform an examination and take x-rays, photographs, and digital impressions. If you are considering metal braces for your child, we make sure to take extra care not to place braces on patients that are too young. This can ultimately shorten their total treatment time without compromising results.
Advancements in orthodontics mean a greater number of patients can comfortably benefit from metal braces.
What to Expect
Before you receive your braces, Dr. Kuhlberg will take plenty of time to ensure you understand your projected treatment timeline and what precautions you will need to take. For example, you will need to avoid very hard, sticky, or crunchy foods to protect your braces and also use special tools to properly clean around your brackets.
In order to place your braces, we will dry and prepare each tooth with a gentle etching solution to cement each bracket in place. Once the brackets are attached, a special light will set the bond and the archwire will be attached. This process can be completed in about two hours. Your teeth may be slightly sore after this visit and subsequent tightening appointments, but we will discuss how you can manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers.
