Invisalign Treatment Can Be Completed In Under 18 Months
If you want to achieve a straighter, healthier smile but are worried that you do not have the time, Invisalign® may be the right choice for you. While traditional orthodontic treatments can take up to two years, Invisalign typically takes 12 to 18 months to complete. As a board-certified orthodontic specialist, Dr. Andrew Kuhlberg can assess your smile and give you an accurate treatment timeframe during your Invisalign consultation at his Avon, CT, office. For patients that want to enjoy the benefits of Invisalign even faster, we also offer Invisalign Express.
Invisalign vs. Other Orthodontic Treatments
Although the actual length of your treatment will depend on your unique case, most Invisalign treatments can be completed in 12 to 18 months.
|Average Treatment Timeline|
|Traditional Braces||18 to 24 months|
|Invisalign||12 to 18 months|
|Invisalign Express||3 to 6 months|
Rather than having your braces adjusted on a monthly basis, you will transition into a new set of aligners every one or two weeks. This approach makes treatment up to 50 percent faster, and most patients start to see a difference in their smile within two to three months of wearing their aligners.
Factors Affecting Treatment Time
There are two major factors that can either shorten or lengthen your treatment time.
Invisalign aligners are only effective when you are wearing them. In general, they should be worn at least 22 hours each day and only removed for eating or brushing your teeth. Forgetting to wear your Invisalign aligners as prescribed can negatively affect your treatment. In some cases, your teeth may move so much that your treatment plan is no longer accurate. When this occurs, your dentist will need to design a new treatment, adding unnecessary time and costs.
If you are a good candidate for Invisalign, you may be able to achieve a straight smile in 18 months or less.
Extent of Malocclusion
The actual length of your treatment will depend on the nature and severity of your oral health concerns. While small gaps can be repaired in just weeks, severe misalignment and crowding can take several months to address.
Tips on How to Shorten Your Invisalign Treatment
Based on your initial evaluation and proposed treatment plan, Dr. Kuhlberg can usually give you an accurate time estimate for how long your Invisalign treatment will take to complete. To ensure that you achieve proper alignment within the proposed timeframe, we recommend you:
- Wear your aligners as prescribed
- Protect your aligners and avoid breaking them
- Transition into new aligners as necessary
- Take your aligners with you during travel
- Attend your evaluations as instructed
When your Invisalign treatment is complete, you will be given a set of retainers to wear. These should be worn as instructed in order to maintain the results of your treatment. Otherwise, you risk having to undergo lengthy retreatment.
Expedited Treatment with Invisalign Express
If you have an important upcoming life event and want to achieve a straighter smile before then, you may also consider Invisalign Express. This option typically takes six months or less to complete. But keep in mind that depending on the condition of your smile, you may still be a better candidate for traditional Invisalign or our other orthodontic options.

“Very friendly warm and compassionate. They educated my son on how to care for his braces, what foods to avoid, how to clean and most of all, they are there even during any emergency including weekends. I highly recommend this Orthodontic practice to anyone who want a personal, friendly one on one relationship with their doctor.” Thu M.
